Sharpening with artificial stones - the normal case

Artificial stones - the compromise between defined properties and reasonable price.

These are the most common stones that are offered. They are also called ceramic grinding stones. They are called so because they are composed of industrially produced ingredients.

The abrasive effect comes mainly from particles of silicon carbide, alumininium oxide, chromium oxide and silicon dioxide embedded in a binder. I have not found anything specific about the difference in use between the different fabrics. By the way, quartz sand consists of silicon dioxide. Recently, there are also artificial stones whose abrasive particles are made of diamond. Since the production is industrial, it is possible to determine the grit more accurately than in the case of natural stones.

Japanese waterstones apparently make up the largest part of the offer. But the oil fans won't let it get them down.

Depending on the hardness of the binder, they wear out at different rates and then have to be dressed again.
