Coated abrasives

Here, a carrier plate is coated with a thin layer of abrasive grains. This makes sense if either the abrasive grains last a long time (e.g. diamond or CBN) or are very cheap(sandpaper).

As carrier material one takes either

• Metal plates, or

• Plastic plates, or

• Paper or linen, and then a flat disc as a base.

The great advantage of this structure:

• you do not need too many abrasive grains

• if it is really flat, the abrasive can be well used for dressing another surface.

• it also does not have to be dressed itself (and must not).

However, if it is not flat, there is nothing you can do about it.
