Most will always end up stropping their iron anyway. So it's a good idea to limit yourself to the stropping process for as long as possible.
You can't keep this strategy up indefinitely. But if you strop with the leather strap often enough in between, you can keep the sharpness for quite a while. At least with chisels, this is done quickly. With planes, it does take a while to remove and reinstall the iron. And the risk of grinding a rear micro-bevel is not really a problem for plane irons. This type of resharpening is the fastest.
