The role of the particular steel alloy is somewhat unclear to me. Especially as far as artificial stones are concerned, one often reads: "for low-alloy steels...". My own chisels are a couple of decades old, and I assume they are low alloy. So how modern steel grades (e.g. chrome vanadium steel) affect sharpenability, I don't know. Addendum: I just read that apparently CrV steel is also considered low-alloyed, since the proportion of alloying substances is less than 5%.
HSS (High Speed Steel), however, is considered "high alloy". That is why diamond and CBN play an important role here.
