The pencil trick

How can you be sure that every spot has really been sanded clean? The pencil trick is recommended here: the entire surface is thoroughly hatched with a rather soft pencil.

If the pencil marks are all sanded off, you can be reasonably sure that every part of the wood was sanded with that grit. The trick is then repeated with the next grit.
