This refers to machines that grind with the flat side. There are a lot of different forms. I have only shown 2 of them: Looking through grinder and Worksharp. Of course, a simple belt sander would also fall into this group. Violin makers love this machine, otherwise you hardly see it. You look through the holes in the flat disc from above to the iron under the disc. You can watch the grinding process live. The discs are also available with diamond coating. There used to be many more providers than there are today.

The Worksharp machine is seen more often. The wheel is covered with sandpaper(there are also CBN discs for this purpose). The iron is either manually guided onto the disc from above or from below with a built-in grinding guide at a defined angle.
